The Kingdom Within Review + Giveaway

Many thanks to the publisher, Cris and Kate Tilton.

Princess Meredith’s eighteenth birthday is fast approaching, but unlike other girls, she is not looking forward to it. Upon her coming of age, she is to marry the prince of Alder, the most powerful kingdom in the world. Though the idea of marriage to a complete stranger is appalling, she knows she has no choice. Without the marriage contract, Stonefall’s alliance with Alder will be lost, and her people will be safe no longer; Theros, King of Talos, has set his eyes of conquest on Stonefall and he wants Meredith dead. Connor, an elite soldier entrusted with Meredith’s safety, arrives at the palace just as things begin to take a turn for the worst. Together, they will embark on a journey of survival, in which Meredith will find that the only thing she never prepared for was falling in love.

Meredith is the princess of Stonefall and she is engaged to Prince Alder, who she hasn’t met. When Theros, th king of Talos, has set eyes on her kingdom, her life is in danger, that’s why her father makes sure she is protected, by hiring a soldier to protect her. Connor soon arrives at palace and when things go really wrong, they embark on a journey of survival. Together they spend days on road, with only one mission: to arrive at Alder safe. But  none of them expects what happens and the two of them must fight to change the destiny..

Meredith is the narrator of this story and we see her do things that are against her station. She’s really likeable as a character, she’s kind, loyal and I’d say that she’s a fighter. Connor is mysterious and he doesn’t say much, though he feels a lot. When I first read the synopsis, I thought that the story would focus on a love triangle, but I’m so happy that I was wrong. We see the relationship between Mer and Connor to develop slowly and it’s great to get to know both of the characters more.

It’s suspenseful, and funny and dramatic. I read it in a day and it was such a pleasurable story. The plot is fast-paced and enthralling and I can’t say that it’s a romantic read, though it has some romantic elements. The writing is really good with vivid descriptions, making it hard to put down. There are some twists here and there, enough to keep your attention.

Initial thoughts:
1. I wish their romance had been a little more slowly developed and that we would be able to see Connor interact more. I’d like to see more of their relationship and expressing their feeling to each more.
2. The book started with an amazing prologue, making me intrigued from the very first page:

Patience, son. The best poison is that which spreads through unsuspecting veins, killing slowly and gradually. The kind that tastes sweet to the tongue and doesn’t bitter until the very end.

3. It’s the first book of the series and I can’t wait to read the next one. This book ended with sort of a cliffhanger, making me have a lot of questions, but I guess I have to wait. The second book will be published shortly.

Great review, and thanks for doing a giveaway!

It sounds like the book takes an overused trope, yet gives it an exciting twist. I would definitely read this, based on your review.
